Huawei unveiled the Kirin 9050 Pro on Monday at its HUAWEI Mate XT 2 product launch event. The release marks the company’s first new Kirin chip introduced at a flagship product launch in six years.

The chip makes its debut in the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate, Huawei’s new tri-folding smartphone, with the company saying that overall device performance has improved by 42% compared with the previous-generation Mate XTs.

According to Huawei, the Kirin 9050 Pro uses a two-layer vertical stacking architecture based on its Tao Law technology framework. The design adds vertical interconnects inside the chip to shorten signal transmission paths.

Huawei says that, without relying on conventional geometric scaling in manufacturing equipment or process nodes, the chip increases transistor density from 155 MTr/mm² to 238 MTr/mm². Its performance cores reach a peak frequency of 3.1GHz, while the area used by its high-speed global on-chip network data paths is reduced by 55%. SRAM operating frequency has also increased by more than 40%, according to the company.

On the performance side, the Kirin 9050 Pro features Huawei’s Lingxi CPU hyperthreading technology. Huawei says its peak single-core performance is 24% higher than the previous generation, while multi-core performance has increased by 52%.

The chip also adds support for hardware-accelerated real-time ray tracing with up to 50 million calculations. It has been optimized for HarmonyOS 7 and works with Huawei’s Ark Engine. The company says the combination can extend overall battery life by an additional 36 minutes.

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate, the first device to feature the Kirin 9050 Pro, adopts a new wing-shaped G-type dual-inward-folding design. It has a 6.5-inch outer display and a 10.2-inch inner display when fully unfolded, while weighing 299 grams.

The phone also introduces a foldable Lingdun privacy display and a third-generation Red Maple camera system, along with video recording with an 18EV dynamic range. Huawei says its color reproduction has improved by 95% compared with the previous generation. The device packs a 5,600mAh battery and supports 50W wireless charging.

The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate starts at RMB 19,999 ($2,980) and will go on sale on September 12. A dedicated bundle that includes a stylus will be available from September 23.

The Kirin 9050 Pro’s debut in the Mate XT 2 allows Huawei to further optimize the interaction between its chip architecture, operating system and hardware. Rather than simply focusing on higher chip specifications, this integration of hardware and software is particularly important for a tri-folding smartphone, as its larger display and more complex form factor place greater demands on performance scheduling, power efficiency, multitasking and app compatibility.

The combination of the Kirin 9050 Pro and HarmonyOS 7 in the Mate XT 2 can also be seen as another step in Huawei’s efforts to strengthen coordination between its chips, operating system and devices.

As the chip is introduced in more flagship devices, its real-world performance in everyday use, gaming, image processing and power efficiency will provide a clearer indication of the maturity of Huawei’s latest chip architecture.

With access to advanced manufacturing processes remaining a challenge, whether Huawei can continue to improve performance and power efficiency through architectural design, chip stacking and hardware-software optimization will also be closely watched.
