On Tuesday, XPeng announced that its automated production line for humanoid robots had begun operations. The first IRON humanoid robot completed the automated final assembly process and autonomously walked off the production line, marking the companyโ€™s move from the R&D stage toward mass production.

XPeng said IRON is the worldโ€™s first high-level general-purpose humanoid robot to be produced on an automated production line.

The production line was designed and built by XPengโ€™s own team. According to the company, it incorporates manufacturing and quality-control systems developed for the automotive industry, while adapting them to the precision and flexibility required for humanoid robot assembly. More than 80% of the lineโ€™s core processes are automated, XPeng said.

Humanoid robots are still in the early stages of commercialization, with most products yet to reach large-scale production and manufacturing processes still involving significant amounts of manual assembly.

Automated production lines could improve manufacturing efficiency and product consistency while providing a foundation for scaling output. However, humanoid robots involve a large number of precision components and complex mechanical systems, meaning automotive manufacturing practices cannot be directly applied in every aspect. The actual efficiency and cost of mass production remain to be tested.

IRON is part of XPengโ€™s physical AI strategy and is positioned as a general-purpose humanoid robot. The company aims to develop a unified hardware and software platform that will allow the robot to operate across different real-world environments and perform a range of tasks.

IRON features a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure and has 76 degrees of freedom across its body, including 21 in its hands. The robot is equipped with three Turing AI chips, providing up to 2,250 TOPS of effective computing power, according to XPeng. The company said its physical AI model can run locally on the robot, allowing it to perceive its surroundings and perform tasks without relying on remote human control.

Under XPengโ€™s current product roadmap, IRON is expected to enter scaled production by the end of 2026 and begin commercial deliveries in 2027. The company expects the robot to initially take on dangerous and highly repetitive tasks before expanding into a wider range of real-world applications.

XPeng has also been stepping up efforts to commercialize its robotics business. The company recently completed its first funding round for the robotics business, raising more than $900 million at a post-money valuation of over $6.3 billion.

According to the company, the latest funding round was led by IDG Capital, with Gaorong Capital participating. It also received strategic investment from Tencent and Alibaba. XPeng Group will continue to retain control of its robotics business.

He Xiaopeng, CEO of XPeng, said the company aims to bring its humanoid robots into the real world in the not-too-distant future.

He said XPengโ€™s robots would be โ€œmore human-like and safer,โ€ require no remote control, support natural interaction and have their own memory. More importantly, he said the goal is not to build robots for demonstrations, but to create products that can deliver real value and achieve mass production.
