Douyin surpassed WeChat in average time spent per user in July, becoming China’s leading app by that measure for the first time, according to a Nomura report. Douyin users spent about 112 to 120 minutes per day on the app, compared with roughly 82 to 85 minutes for WeChat users.

WeChat remained ahead in daily active users, with 931 million compared with Douyin’s 714 million. However, Douyin’s daily user base grew 19% from a year earlier, versus 3% for WeChat, while ByteDance apps collectively captured 40.9% of Chinese mobile internet usage time, ahead of Tencent’s 29.1%.
