A new payment app called TenPayGo has quietly appeared on Apple’s App Store, sparking speculation that Tencent may be preparing a standalone payments product. The app is an English-language version developed by Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., but its registration and core functions are not yet publicly available.
In response, Tencent said TenPayGo is an internal beta product designed as a lifestyle assistant for overseas visitors to China. It aims to provide an integrated digital services experience, including mobile payments, and is currently only being tested on a limited basis.
According to publicly available information, TenPayGo simplifies onboarding compared with WeChat. Users can register with only an email address and link international payment methods such as Visa, Mastercard, or Apple Pay to make payments directly, without requiring a Chinese mobile number or domestic bank account.
After linking a card, overseas users can generate QR codes for merchants to scan, or scan merchant QR codes themselves to complete transactions. The app also supports transaction history tracking. Its payment infrastructure is built on Tencent’s existing WeChat Pay system. [TechWeb, in Chinese]
